Bio
Hello, my name is Jean-Philippe “J.P.” Dobrin. I’m a photographer based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. I am available for travel and frequently accept destination events.
I fell in love with photography when I was 14. The process of developing film; cracking open a film canister in total darkness and then unwinding it out of cold stainless steel holders with wet hands, examining negatives through window light- was absolute magic. Seeing print images emerge from chemical baths, the smell of fixer, all lit by a single red light bulb, was a wonderful way to spend lunch times during high school.
I have been studying/working/living/breathing photography for the past 15 years and am truly appreciative to be doing what I love. I received a BFA in documentary photography from the Academy of Art San Francisco, which has allowed me to connect with people from different walks of life all over the world.
I was recently awarded a distinction from the WPJA (the prestigious Wedding Photojournalist Association) and The Knot’s editors named me as a 2011 and 2012 “Best of the Knot” vendor.
When I’m not photographing weddings, I make pictures for editorial news outlets, non-profit and advertising clients. Some of my clients include NBC Bay Area, The Huffington Post, Cisco Systems, Men’s Warehouse and San Francisco Weekly. My documentary photography work can be viewed at www.jpdobrin.com
